Installing Zekr Quran Application in Ubuntu

Zekr is one of the best Quran application on Linux. It has been developed under Zekr developing project which aims to provide the Islamic suitable application that run on Linux. 

Zekr has complete basic features to fulfill the basic need to reveal the Quran texts, translate it into various languages, and listening the al-Quran on Linux. Zekr can run on the online and offline basis. For the offline, user has to download some materials, especially for the Quran recitation. One of the most important Zekr feature is translation into more than 10 languages,  such as Indonesian, Turkish, Dutch, etc.

This article will show You how to install Zekr to Ubuntu and Linux Mint. Follow these steps to install it on computer:

1. You need Install supporting fonts before installation. The fonts Arabic which is not installed on default. Run these command to install the needed fonts:

 sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys EF400C7C

 sudo apt-get update

 sudo apt-get install zekr ttf-me-quran ttf-sil-scheherazade

 sudo apt-get install ttf-farsiweb 

You can download and install the fonts manually as well. Click ttf-quran and ttf-sil-scheherazade  to download and install it manually.

2. Once You finished fonts installation, run this command on terminal:

 sudo apt-get install zekr

You can install manually the translation files. Get it on Sourceforge.

Now you can run Zekr application. Installation will make a sub menu called Islamic Software on your Ubuntu or Linux Mint Menu. Using Zekr, You can read Quran, find some verses and listen it. It provides you the feature to select the most interesting reader according to your wish.
